Meridian, MS—Romar Hernandez's play is elegant, and Jake McDonough's play is scrappy. Pair the two of them together in doubles play and you get the best of both worlds. The elegance of Hernandez and the scrappiness of McDonough proved to be to much for the ITA doubles field as they cruised to three lopsided victories to take home the doubles title in the 2013 USTA/ITA Men's Regional Doubles Championship.
"The doubles combination of McDonough and Hernandez has turned out to be pure gold," according to Coach Wright. "Romar is laid-back and loose, and McDonough is hard-nosed and smart. While Romar keeps things light out there on the court, Jake knows when to rein in the frivolity. The two of them have distinctly different temperaments, but they complement each other very well."
Hernandez and McDonough peaked at the right time during the tournament and played their best tennis in the semifinals and finals. In the semifinals, Hernandez and McDonough played lights-out tennis, scoring an impressive 8-0 shutout over their counterparts from Holmes CC. In the finals, they dominated Meridian's Kevin Millet and Judson Watson, 8-1.
The MMI pair will now compete in the 2013 USTA/ITA Small College Championships in Fort Myers, FL. The tournament will run from Oct. 10-13 and be held at the Three Oaks Tennis Center.
