12/14/13 - Sophomore Monta Sanford scored 23 points to lead Marion Military Institute to a 80-69 victory over the Faulkner State Community College Sun Chiefs Saturday afternoon.
Sanford shot 5-of-10 from the floor, mostly on layups and short jumpers, and grabbed three rebounds as the Tigers (6-6) avenged a 87-59 loss to FSCC from earlier this season.
Marion led by 20 at halftime, with the lead growing to as much as 24 early in the second half. Several runs by the Sun Chiefs closed the gap to just nine points late in the second half but key free throw shooting by the home squad sealed the deal and the double digit victory. MMI finished shooting 74% (23-of-31) from the charity stripe and 54% (27-of-50) from the floor.
Besides Sanford, Marion finished with two players in double figures: sophomore Raymond Hobbs scored 15 points and grabbed a team high six rebounds while sophomore Greg Henry finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
MMI (6-6) hosts Alabama Southern CC at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 17th before heading home for the Christmas Break.
