11/5/13 – The MMI men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a win at home in front of a full house, defeating Enterprise State Community College 96-79. Marion built an early 11-point lead in the first half but costly turnovers allowed the Boll Weevils to cut their deficit to just one point at halftime (38-37).
Marion started the second half with the same tempo and quickly got the lead once again to double digits. Unfortunately for ESCC, they could never chip into the lead with the Tigers taking control of the game late. Sophomore guard Monta Sanford led Marion with 22 points. Freshman Charles Steele, Jr. scored 21 points for the Tigers. Redshirt Freshman Orlando Davis shot well from behind the arc and finished with 17 points. Davis also collected 7 rebounds. Sophomore Raymond Hobbs recorded his first double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Sophomore point guard Jibrail Hayes dished out seven assists and finished with nine points. Jamar Pope scored eight points while Greg Henry finished with six points and Sammie Battle recorded two points.
The Tigers will travel to Tallahassee Community College this weekend to participate in their Tip-Off Classic. They will play the host school (TCC) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then face Sante Fe CC on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
